A new project of the OKC Boathouse Foundation, the 1st Annual OK Riversports Runderground took place February 12, 2011 and partnered OK Riversports with Downtown OKC Underground.
In 2007, Elliott + Associates Architects designed the renovation and lighting of the Underground and have won numerous state, regional, and national architectural awards for the improvement and beautifying of this once mysterious labyrinth under our metropolis. Since the renovation, it has been a great way to escape from bad weather and busy streets for travelers and exercise enthusiast in Downtown OKC.
Over 180 runners of all ages across the OKC metro registered and participated in this Fun Run. Many participants brought their young children to run with them. The course was 5K which is approximately 3 miles + 564 feet + 2.4 inches. It began and ended in the Northwest Convention Lobby of the Cox Convention Center.
With snow and ice still on the ground outside, the underground course was temperate and well lit as runners traversed along long carpeted corridors, past ornate reception halls, and up and down stairwells and escalators (stationary for this occasion). Small groups that had been formed before the run, took off every 5 minutes. This organization helped to ease congestion and insure the safety and enjoyment of the runners.
