Consider economy by repetition.
When considering serpentine surfaces, use faceted planes vs. actual curving surfaces.
Delete expensive “dynamite” excavation where possible. Find an economical solution to basement storage construction.
Use the cleared site to our advantage with a minimum of cut and fill. Use the site crown as an advantage.
Consider the building and the parking as singular vs. separate.
Consider a 2-story concept because it allows open vertical space that provides for easier staff access and “connection.” People are not separated by vertical division.
A 2-story building will allow the use of economical roof top mechanical systems.
Because of the rainy climate, provide pedestrian protection where possible.
Consider the native “rocky” site as the building foundation. Make the architecture both rugged and refined.
Incorporate color through nature into the landscape concept.
I have been inspired by Keith Rinearson’s photos at the drill sites. This building is inspired by the concept of exploration. In particular, the idea of drilling into the earth’s surface, and even more specifically, the concept of rotation, spinning, and drilling as a phenomenon. Imagine the architecture in concentric motion . . . Even the sun shadows support the notion of the drill bit spinning into the earth . . .
