Pierce & Ward Laurel Canyon Remodel: Phone Nook, Grammy Shelf

In Laurel Canyon, Grammy-winning producer Tyler Johnson and talent manager Lindsay Marias worked with AD100 design studio Pierce & Ward to restore a stripped midcentury ranch. The project reimagines the open-plan living area as intimate, interconnected nooks.

A Charismatic Laurel Canyon Reimagining

Pierce & Ward transformed the house’s atmosphere by treating the living space as a collection of intimate zones. Each nook is designed for specific moments, from cocktail conversations to record listening sessions and calls.

The strategy centers on warmth, tactile materials, and a sense of graceful aging alongside the house. The designers chose wide-plank pine floors meant to age with the structure, establishing a cohesive rhythm across rooms.

Warm wood tones and burgundy-tinged brown millwork (Townsend Harbor Brown by Benjamin Moore) anchor the palette. Gray-veined marble grounds the interior, creating a forest-inspired feel.

A glossy-green Yamaha piano sits as a musical centerpiece. Life-sized stuffed dogs and travel mementos personalize the rooms.

Bold details and intimate corners

The snug area features a high-gloss chocolate-brown wall unit and a deep velvet sofa, creating a cozy retreat. The powder room and bathroom showcase bold wallpaper and two-tone tile—caramel on the exterior and pale green inside—framed by lozenge windows.

Color and geometry are used in playful yet sophisticated ways within the midcentury framework. Install-time improvisation deepened collaboration, with hardware selections, paint choices, and final tweaks refined on site.

The designers embraced a “put-on-your-jewelry” finishing philosophy—polished but never precious. This approach adds to the home’s inviting atmosphere.

Indoor-outdoor life and social spaces

Outdoor dining reinforces the California indoor-outdoor lifestyle. Terrace seating features rattan chairs from Sharland England and a Serena & Lily dining table, inviting casual meals.

This seamless transition from interior to exterior is central to the home’s comfortable, everyday luxury. Social spaces flow naturally for family and guests.
