Bricolage Self-Builds Budget-Friendly London Home

London-based studio Bricolage has successfully designed and self-built a budget-friendly three-bedroom residence known as Castlands Road in Lewisham. Crafted by studio founder Will Howard and his partner Sogand Howard, the home occupies a back-garden plot nestled right behind a traditional Victorian terrace.

This innovative project highlights the power of citizen-led housing as a viable, sustainable model for future urban densification. By taking construction into their own hands, the couple wanted to explore deeper concepts found in home design and community belonging.

Embracing the Ethos of Self-Build Architecture

The design draws deep inspiration from Lewisham’s rich historical background of grassroots building initiatives. These ideals mirror principles often celebrated in historical architecture movements that prioritize human labor and material honesty.

Conceived intelligently as a terraced house in waiting, the building features blank white-brick side walls. These specific elements are purposefully engineered to seamlessly connect with any future adjacent properties that might pop up.

Resourceful Materials and Exterior Craftsmanship

The exterior showcases an inventive selection of salvaged bricks arranged in an eye-catching, alternating grey-and-white pattern along the corners. This clever detailing is further enhanced by an asymmetric gable roof and charming pale green window frames.

Following the terrain’s natural slope, the ground floor steps downward fluidly. It transitions smoothly from a front dining area through a central kitchen down into a cozy living space.

Connecting Indoor Spaces to the Garden

Large folding glass doors bridge the gap between the interior living area and the outdoor environment. This establishes a continuous visual and spatial link to the paved patio and garden.
