Fresno Man Sentenced to 52 Months for Ponzi Scheme

A federal court recently sentenced a Fresno man to 52 months in prison for orchestrating a massive $9 million real estate Ponzi scheme. The announcement was made by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California following a thorough investigation into fraudulent investment practices.

The perpetrator, Matthew Campbell, previously entered a guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston. Authorities have scheduled a subsequent restitution hearing to determine exact financial repayments for the impacted victims.

Unraveling the Real Estate Fraud

Court documentation indicates that Campbell managed two distinct local enterprises, Preferred Property LLC and Ampez Rehab Investments LLC, beginning in 2012. While these entities ostensibly focused on property acquisition and building development, they eventually shifted into fraudulent territory.

The Mechanics of the Scheme

Starting in 2018, operations morphed into a classic Ponzi structure fueled by fabricated financial statements. For broader context on industry standards, readers can explore our architecture articles to understand legitimate market practices.

Campbell targeted more than 40 victims over a multi-year period, raking in roughly $9.1 million through promises of unsustainable payouts. Rather than deploying capital into authentic assets, he funneled at least $2.29 million of fresh capital directly to legacy participants.

The Aftermath and Restitution

Federal agencies, including the FBI, worked meticulously to expose the deception and bring the perpetrator to justice. Assistant U.S. Attorneys successfully prosecuted the matter to protect vulnerable populations.

Protecting Future Investments

Law enforcement officials stressed that the legal outcome underscores a zero-tolerance policy for exploiting retirees and families. Safeguarding hard-earned savings remains paramount across all property sectors.
