Mastering Prefabrication Dynamics

Hennessey Architecture designed a custom 2,887-square-foot ground-up family home in San Carlos, California, utilizing prefabrication to make the project viable. The clients requested a modular approach, prompting the architectural team to collaborate with fabricator Method Homes.

Optimizing Module Dimensions

The design is built around specific module dimensions of 16 feet wide, 13 feet high, and 60 feet long. A two-story scheme was developed, placing circulation paths like hallways and stairways in the spaces between the modules.

The perimeter of the boxes was carefully carved out to create strategic window and door openings that optimize sunlight and privacy. These openings ensure that natural light penetrates deep into the core layout.

Façade Integration and Materials

To unify the individual modules into a cohesive exterior, the facade incorporates two distinct wood siding treatments. A rainscreen system of narrow vertical boards and diagonal tongue-and-groove siding help break up and stitch the volumes together.

Steel slats were additionally integrated to mediate solar exposure and shield the home from neighbors. This meticulous attention to exterior layering enhances both functional comfort and street-facing aesthetic appeal.

Warm Interiors and Sustainable Landscapes

Inside, the modules open into light-filled, shared gathering spaces characterized by a warm, oak-dominated material palette. Every room feels naturally connected while maintaining defined functional boundaries for daily family living.

Finally, the property features low-water landscaping by Studio Mala alongside a living roof that brings nature directly to the second level. Thoughtful detailing like this guarantees a harmonious relationship between the structure and its surrounding ecosystem.
