Czech studio Šépka Architekti has successfully completed the Wardrobe House, an innovative and compact prefabricated dwelling situated in the garden of a historic villa. Built to accommodate a growing family, this detached structure provides independent living quarters for two children without altering the primary residence. For those tracking modern residential solutions, exploring architecture articles can offer broader context on similar spatial interventions.
Modelled directly after a footed wooden wardrobe, the building features a distinct tall and narrow profile elevated off the ground on slender legs. It is discreetly nestled among mature trees at the property rear to prevent any visual clash with the early 20th-century main villa.
Innovative Prefabrication and Site Integration
Smart Foundation Engineering
The lower framework of the dwelling utilizes prefabricated steel components that were seamlessly installed on-site via a crane. To protect the fragile root systems of neighboring mature trees, engineers supported this steel ground level using specialized micropiles.
This open ground-level framework cleverly encloses a covered entrance and an intimate patio area. Residents can easily access the upper levels from here through a compact, space-saving spiral staircase.

Timber Construction Kit
The striking three-storey upper section functions largely as a construction kit comprised of lightweight wooden parts. Builders quickly assembled this portion using durable timber and high-quality plywood panels.
This efficient method reduced construction time and minimized environmental disruption on the landscaped site. The resulting envelope bridges modern prefabrication techniques with natural material aesthetics.
Spatial Efficiency and Interior Design
Maximized Minimalist Interiors
Spanning a minimal footprint of just five by 2.5 meters, the dwelling achieves a total usable floor area of 34 square meters. Despite its compact dimensions, the interior comfortably accommodates a shared kitchen, a dining zone, and two functional ensuite bedrooms.
To enhance the impression of spaciousness, the interior surfaces feature exposed plywood panels alongside doorless open cabinetry. Enthusiasts of unique spatial configurations often enjoy discovering home design strategies that maximize small footprints.
Dynamic Façade Treatments
Large glass elevations on the openable side of the structure frame sweeping views of the surrounding garden greenery. When privacy or weather protection is required, these towering glass facades can be completely sealed using massive exterior shutters.
This thoughtful kinetic feature allows the compact home to dynamically transform its relationship with the outdoors. Ultimately, the project demonstrates how creative prefabrication can successfully address modern density challenges.
