Renowned architect Ryue Nishizawa has completed a striking, giant orange observation cone situated within a recycling complex and landfill basin on Shikoku island, Japan. This visionary project was built to celebrate the inaugural Setouchi Art and Industry 2026 festival, which uniquely opens previously closed-off industrial sites to the general public.
Co-founded with Kazuyo Sejima, the SANAA architect designed this structure as a core highlight of the Final Disposal Site exhibition. Through creative spatial interventions, the initiative invites visitors to explore broader architecture articles and rethink the hidden infrastructure supporting modern society.
Engineering the Industrial Landscape
Measuring 33 metres in diameter and four metres in height, the cone is purposefully shaped to emulate an artificial hill within the expansive basin. Its luminous orange finish provides a dramatic visual contrast against the surrounding blue-green landfill lining and the natural landscape.

Immersive Visitor Engagement
The platform encourages guests to observe how both natural forces and human activities continually shape our environment. To access the remote site, participants must ride designated buses and wear specific workwear provided by the organizers.
This immersive approach intentionally integrates everyday people directly into the composition of the working industrial backdrop. Organized by the Japan Industrial Art Foundation, the decentralised festival leverages architecture tours to foster a deeper understanding of material circulation.
Re-Examining Hidden Infrastructure
Ultimately, the exhibition aims to let the public re-examine Japan’s hidden industrial infrastructure and core technologies. By merging contemporary design with active industrial complexes, projects like this offer fresh perspectives on regional development and environmental management.
