Chipperfield Architects designs monolithic concrete pavilion for Anselm Kiefer.

David Chipperfield Architects has completed a striking monolithic concrete gallery situated on the grounds of the Carmen Würth Forum in Künzelsau, Germany. The newly built Anselm Kiefer Pavilion was custom-designed to house a single, massive masterpiece that previously lacked a suitable exhibition space.

This minimalist structure reflects a deeply integrated approach between architecture and fine art. Professionals interested in similar projects can read more about these concepts through our architecture articles.

Shaped by Monumental Art

The form of the cuboid pavilion was entirely determined by German painter Anselm Kiefer’s monumental artwork titled “Schwarze Flocken” (Black Flakes). Measuring an impressive 11 by 7.1 meters, the mixed-media piece shares its poignant name with a poem by Holocaust survivor Paul Celan.

Because of its immense scale, the painting could not fit inside the main museum building. David Chipperfield Architects worked closely with the artist to construct an entirely bespoke architectural container.

Materiality and Exterior Design

The exterior of the building relies on a restrained portico that shelters the entrance and marks a clear transition from the landscape. Constructed from brick and bush-hammered concrete, the facade visually references the nearby Carmen Würth Forum.

Such contextual sensitivity often ties into broader traditions of regional architecture. The rough texture allows the gallery to blend effortlessly into the surrounding sculpture garden.

Tranquil Interiors and Natural Climate Control

Inside, visitors encounter an exposed timber roof structure and walls lined with warm clay plaster. Strategic rooflights invite shifting natural light into the gallery to emphasize the seasonal atmosphere.

Esophagus-free mechanical systems, the building utilizes a clever three-layer wall construction. This naturally adapts to weather variations while keeping the interior frost-free, offering valuable lessons for modern home design.
