GMP Architekten Overhauls Montreal Olympic Stadium Roof

German architecture studio GMP Architekten is leading a high-profile consortium to overhaul the chronically problematic roof of Montreal’s iconic Olympic Stadium. Originally built for the 1976 Summer Games, the structure has faced decades of severe mechanical failures, weather damage, and financial hurdles.

Engineering Challenges of a Montreal Landmark

The original stadium roof was a retractable Kevlar membrane designed by French architect Roger Taillibert. However, harsh winters routinely wreaked havoc on the soft textile material.

Falling icicles punctured the fabric repeatedly, leading to over 20,000 penetrations and forcing regular seasonal closures. These ongoing structural vulnerabilities turned the famous venue into a massive financial burden for local operators.

Innovative Solutions for a Durable Future

The renovation team is replacing the old textile setup with a permanent white steel deck featuring shock-absorbing top cladding. This new configuration utilizes a lighter outer ring composed of steel and aluminium.

Transforming the Interior Experience

Crucially, the new design introduces a stunning ring of glass skylights that will flood the interior arena with natural daylight. This marks the very first time the stadium floor will experience true ambient sunlight.

Mega cranes will soon hoist the fully constructed inner roof assembly into position roughly 50 to 60 meters high. The inner assembly is being built right on the stadium floor to streamline construction efficiency.

Respecting Original Organic Geometry

Despite the massive structural overhaul, the design team carefully preserved Taillibert’s original organic geometry and sculptural form. They successfully avoided introducing competing architectural novelties that might disrupt public affection.

The inner roof section is slated for completion by the end of the year alongside extensive interior modernizations. These fixes ultimately guarantee a vibrant, year-round future for one of North America’s most recognizable engineering feats.
