Architecture studio GRT Architects has successfully completed the first major renovation of New York’s iconic Storefront for Art and Architecture gallery in twenty years architecture articles. The comprehensive revitalization project focused on modernizing the single, highly challenging triangular gallery space alongside its outdated electrical and HVAC infrastructure.
Located in the Lower East Side, the cultural institution occupies a sliver of a building distinguished by a famous concrete facade historical architecture designed by Steven Holl and Vito Acconci. This recent overhaul breathes new life into the urban landmark while carefully preserving its experimental spirit.
Modernizing a Triangular Icon
The design team gutted the floors, walls, and ceilings to eliminate decades of accumulated architectural irregularities that previously hindered exhibitions. Upgraded track lighting and environmental systems now provide precise control for diverse installations informational guides.

Flexible Display Innovations
GRT Architects introduced a custom, modular aluminium shelving system built using components from the industrial framing company 80/20. This flexible display configuration can be completely deconstructed or adjusted with variable heights, integrated video projection panels, and concealed curtains.
To complement the flexible shelving, the studio added a mobile gallery desk and installed a sleek stainless steel handle on one of the rotating facade panels. This clever addition gives the building a functional doorknob for the first time in its history home design.
Artistic Collaborations and Exterior Glow
These new industrial elements were thoughtfully informed by the building’s original riveted structural steel beams. Furthermore, artist and board member Jorge Pardo completely wrapped the gallery’s compact bathroom in vibrant, colorful tile work regional architecture.
Finally, the architects illuminated the concrete exterior signage to ensure the distinctive wedge-shaped institution stands out vibrantly on its block architecture tours. These updates guarantee that the gallery will continue inspiring avant-garde design conversations for decades to come.
