Restored Wright Planetarium Reopens at Florida Southern College

Frank Lloyd Wright’s only built planetarium has officially reopened to the public after a comprehensive, nearly six-year restoration project. Situated on the campus of Florida Southern College, the historic structure returns to active use following decades of dormancy.

Originally completed in 1958 as part of the Polk County Science Building, the facility stopped projecting stars when its equipment failed in 2004. This careful revival breathes new life into a vital landmark of mid-century American historical architecture.

Restoring a Masterpiece

Florida Southern College proudly houses the world’s largest single-site collection of Wright architecture, featuring 13 unique structures designed under his “Child of the Sun” master plan. Originally conceived as an observatory, the planetarium eventually opened as a dome theater in 1960.

Exterior and Structural Repairs

Restoration architects faced significant challenges repairing the building’s worn exterior elements. Crews installed a brand-new roof and meticulously replaced more than 280 custom-made exterior tiles.

Every step of the exterior overhaul adhered closely to the original design blueprints. Preservationists worked diligently to ensure that the material integrity matched Wright’s distinct aesthetic standards.

Interior Revitalization and Layout

Interior renovations focused heavily on stripping away decades of unwanted modifications and intrusive additions. Workers removed an awkward computer closet that had disrupted the original spatial flow.

Refurbishing the dark red floor and repainting the walls allowed restoration teams to bring back the 60-seat theater’s rare circular seating arrangement. This layout provides visitors with an authentic experience akin to the venue’s early opening days.

Integrating Modern Technology

Outdated audio-visual systems that once relied on obsolete eight-track tapes were entirely removed. Modern digital projection and acoustic systems now fill the dome theater.

The facility currently features immersive public programs like Cosmic Adventure and Destination Mars: The New Frontier. College leadership notes that these technological updates surpass even Wright’s original futuristic ambitions for the space.

The successful revival offers incredible inspiration for professionals working in architecture articles and preservation today. Enthusiasts can once again explore how science and innovative design intersect seamlessly under one iconic dome.
