Stacked LA ADUs Redefine Urban Density and Compact Design

Design-build studio Qastic has completed an innovative residential project in Los Angeles featuring two stacked accessory dwelling units. This compact structure occupies a mere 1,500-square-foot footprint while completely redefining modern urban density.

Reimagining the Quonset Hut

The building consists of a pair of arched metal volumes reminiscent of traditional Quonset huts. These unique structures are positioned perpendicularly with one stacked directly on top of the other.

Vaulted Geometry and Drainage

This vaulted design cleverly reimagines conventional pitched roofs to optimize water drainage. At the same time, the curved ceilings generate expansive interior volumes and increase natural daylight.

The exterior relies on a sturdy steel frame wrapped in white-painted, galvanized Purlin Bearing Rib panels. This choice forms a high-performance, heat-reflective cool roof system tailored for the Southern California climate.

Independent Living and Flexibility

Each level operates as a completely independent household complete with its own private entry. Every unit comprises an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space, alongside a comfortable bedroom and bathroom.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Flow

A central enclosed staircase grants access to the upper unit, which boasts private balconies overlooking the sweeping city skyline. Meanwhile, the lower unit features charming patios that connect directly to the surrounding site landscaping.

The curved ceilings enhance spatial continuity while reducing material usage without sacrificing structural performance. Designed with total adaptability in mind, the dual-level building can function as two separate rental units or merge into a single-family home over time. Ultimately, Qastic intends this model to pave the way for scalable, alternative housing solutions in low-rise neighborhoods.
