Wegwerth and Dehn Unveil Shingled Armadillo Furniture Series

Designers Lukas Wegwerth and Corinna Dehn have captured the architecture and design world’s attention with their latest showcase at London’s Galleri Fumi. Their newly unveiled Armadillo furniture series breathes fresh life into discarded materials through inventive, organic crafting techniques.

This striking collection redefines contemporary interiors by merging sustainable practices with imaginative silhouettes reminiscent of scaled forest creatures. Exploring these boundary-pushing creations offers deep insight into how modern makers view spatial home design and material reuse.

The Inspiration Behind the Armadillo Series

Rooted deeply in vernacular building traditions, the collection draws its primary material inspiration from a 19th-century shingled house in Germany. Renovating this ancestral property sparked a creative journey for the designers.

Sourcing Local Elements

The facade shingles used throughout the series were meticulously harvested from demolished structures, active construction sites, and previous artistic undertakings. Utilizing these reclaimed building components highlights a growing commitment to environmental consciousness within structural arts, bridging the gap between conventional construction elements and fine furniture.

Craftsmanship and Surface Treatments

Transforming weathered architectural fragments into high-end furniture requires an immense amount of manual preparation and artistic vision. Every single shingle undergoes a rigorous cycle of cleaning, brushing, and sanding before it ever meets a custom surface treatment.

Organic Formations

To achieve rich tonal depth, the creators applied wet wood stains, traditional linseed oil paints, and chemical ebonising techniques that allow colors to blend seamlessly. Because each shingle varies in size and shape to match complex vertical and horizontal curves, the ultimate texture and silhouette of pieces like the dining table, cabinets, and stand-alone screen only emerge organically as construction nears completion.
