Rotterdam’s New Tokyo-Inspired Echo Listening Bar Blends Brutalism

Rotterdam welcomes its first Tokyo-inspired listening bar, named Echo, blending global cafe culture with local industrial heritage. Brought to life by creative director Jeff Hoogendijk, DJ Khalil Ryahi, and architect Paul Cournet, the venue sits proudly inside a landmark brutalist structure.

The multi-functional space transforms effortlessly from a daytime coffee hub into a vibrant evening destination for music lovers. Its seamless integration of sound, raw materials, and flexible layout has quickly resonated with the local creative community.

Industrial Roots and Brutalist Canvas

Nestled on the ground floor of the iconic Groot Handelsgebouw office block, Echo takes full advantage of its stark architectural surroundings. The venue’s rugged concrete canvas provides a striking backdrop for modern hospitality design.

Honoring Seaport Heritage

The main service counter and DJ station are constructed entirely from wooden shipping crates typically utilized for moving fine art. Stamped with “handled with care,” this bespoke structure mirrors the founders’ philosophy of treating music with utmost reverence.

Acoustic Precision and Custom Craftsmanship

Sound quality remains the primary heartbeat of the venue, backed by a high-end custom acoustic setup. Sculptural speaker towers flank the bar area, perfectly calibrated to fill the brutalist shell with warm, immersive sound.

Collaborative Design Elements

Polish brand Tylko supplied modular shelving specially designed to showcase vinyl records alongside integrated speakers developed by Form Follows Frequency. Meanwhile, local designer Sabine Marcelis contributed signature ombré mirrors and a sleek linear resin lamp to soften the raw interior.

Echo operates as a flexible environment capable of hosting intimate dinners, art exhibitions, and dedicated listening sessions. This dynamic adaptability ensures that the venue remains a vital anchor for Rotterdam’s thriving nightlife.
