Tatiana Bilbao Unveils Borrowed Earth Rammed-Earth Art Omi Installation

Mexico-based architecture practice Tatiana Bilbao Estudio has unveiled a striking large-scale outdoor installation titled Borrowed Earth at the Art Omi arts center in Ghent, New York. Positioned within the 120-acre sculpture park, the project explores materiality and time through ephemeral design concepts that resonate deeply with modern architecture articles.

The temporary structure features four 7.5-foot-tall rammed-earth cruciform columns paired with a central cross form acting as a functional bench. By utilizing a repeatable basic unit, the studio successfully shaped both the standalone seating elements and the surrounding architectural columns.

Engineering and Materiality of Rammed Earth

Curator Julia van den Hout noted that the unique cruciform configurations evolved naturally to address specific structural challenges tied to working with rammed earth. Constructing these elements required precise on-site techniques guided closely by a specialized Mexico-based rammed-earth consultant.

Local Sourcing and Construction

Builders sourced local soil directly from a nearby construction site down the road to anchor the project in its regional geography. This earth was blended with sand and lime, then packed systematically layer by layer into wooden formwork to craft the durable sculptures.

Embracing Impermanence and Natural Decay

The installation is purposefully engineered to break down and slowly decay over an approximate two-year timeline. Because unpredictable weather patterns dictate weathering effects, the exact lifespan of this tactile structure functions as an ongoing live experiment.

Joining a Legacy of Park Commissions

This temporary earthen project proudly follows other celebrated recent park commissions by notable practices like MOS Architects and Young Projects. Observers interested in contextual building traditions can find further informational guides exploring how temporary interventions shape public land use.
