Lion Green Road Wins 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize

Welcome to our latest breakdown of groundbreaking architectural achievements, where we explore how modern design continually reshapes our communities. In this post, we examine the remarkable triumph of the Lion Green Road development in Croydon, which recently secured the prestigious 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize.

Designed collaboratively by Mary Duggan Architects and Ruff Architects, this innovative project redefines high-density urban living. For more inspiration on modern living spaces, feel free to explore our home design guides.

A Masterclass in Urban Density and Form

Commissioned initially to deliver a modest 80 homes on a challenging, sloping woodland site, the design team boldly increased capacity. They successfully integrated 157 residential flats while fiercely protecting and expanding local green spaces.

Crystalline Towers and Natural Light

The complex is brilliantly composed of five crystalline, star-shaped pink and brown brick towers that catch the eye immediately. Each tower is subtly rotated to maximize daylight penetration and guarantee acoustic privacy for every tenant.

Constructed on a remarkably strict budget of just £2,500 per square meter, the project cuts no corners on interior quality. Every single home enjoys dual-aspect views and charming inset loggia balconies.

Redefining Affordable Housing and Community

Developed by the now-defunct council-owned company Brick by Brick, the scheme sets a stellar benchmark for public sector housing delivery. It proves that municipal projects can achieve world-class architectural standards despite significant financial constraints.

Tenure-Blind Architecture

Half of the flats are designated as affordable housing, while the remaining units operate successfully as private rentals. Crucially, the scheme completely avoids tenure segregation by offering identical, generous entrances and lobbies for all residents.

Interspersed with sensory gardens, community allotments, and vibrant play areas, the site earned praise as a true garden neighborhood. If you enjoy seeing how regional contexts shape buildings, you might love our regional architecture collections.

Overcoming Adversity to Leave a Lasting Legacy

The path to completion was far from smooth, as the project weathered hundreds of fierce local objections during planning. Yet, it stands today as an undeniable testament to visionary municipal housebuilding.

Lessons for Future City Builders

The development offers vital lessons for architects and engineers tackling difficult terrain and tight budgetary restrictions. It demonstrates that thoughtful urban planning can seamlessly blend high density with ecological sensitivity.
