Celebrating the Vanguard of Vertical Urbanism: Announcing the 2026 Council on Vertical Urbanism Award of Excellence Winners

The Future of Our Cities, Built Upwards

This year’s Council on Vertical Urbanism (CVU) Award of Excellence, formerly known as the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat’s awards, has unveiled its roster of winners. The awards honor 73 projects across 20 countries and 20 categories, highlighting the changing landscape of vertical urbanism.

The CVU’s selections reflect a shift in design philosophy. Projects now emphasize adaptability, interdisciplinary thinking, resource management, technology integration, public engagement, and social and environmental value.

Javier Quintana de Uña, CEO of CVU, stated that the chosen projects exemplify these principles.

A Global Showcase of Innovation and Responsibility

The winning projects show the global reach and diverse uses of vertical urbanism. From tall mega-structures to mid-rise hubs, the awards recognize achievements at different heights and locations.

Recognizing Diverse Programmatic Excellence

The CVU Awards celebrate excellence across a broad program:

  • Categorical and Regional Dominance: The awards recognized buildings in various height categories, including under 100 meters, 100 to 300 meters, and over 300 meters. Regional honors highlighted achievements in the Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Oceania.
  • Notable Architectural and Engineering Achievements: Notable recipients include 270 Park Avenue in New York by Foster + Partners, which won the “Best 300m+” award and others. Wasl Tower in Dubai by UNStudio and CPIC Xintiandi Commercial Center in Shanghai by Kohn Pedersen Fox also received significant recognition.
  • Forward-Thinking and Specialized Honors: The program also recognizes innovative future projects and specialized categories. Projects like the Midea Global Innovation Park (Atelier MA) and the Punggol Digital District (WOHA) showcase new approaches. Parkline Place in Sydney by Foster + Partners and Cox Architecture highlights collaborative design.
  • Specialized Awards for a Holistic Approach: The CVU also celebrated expertise in key areas of vertical urbanism. Awards included the Urban Habitat Award, Future Project Award, 10 Year Award, Construction Award, and Repositioning Award. Technical achievement was recognized with awards for Structure, Façade, Systems, and Space Within.

Innovation at the Forefront of Design

The 2026 awards spotlighted advances in engineering and safety. This year’s innovation awards recognized several pioneering solutions:

  • An active opening window module designed for better fire safety, focusing on occupant well-being.
  • A Motioneering opposed pendulum tuned mass damper, which improves the stability and comfort of tall buildings.
  • WSP’s steel re-use tool, promoting more sustainable construction practices in the industry.

Building More Than Just Structures: A Focus on Social Impact

The CVU’s commitment to recognizing the broader societal contribution of vertical projects is clear. Several socially focused distinctions were awarded, underscoring the importance of inclusivity and community integration:

  • Awards for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion and Space Within were presented to projects like Geneo in Singapore and Julia West House in Portland. These awards highlight successful approaches to creating equitable and user-centric spaces within vertical environments.

The culmination of these awards will be celebrated at the 2026 VU Summit. The event is scheduled to take place in London from October 26th to 29th.

The esteemed ‘Best in Category’ awards will be officially announced at the summit. The release also shares information about related competitions and upcoming submission deadlines for future architectural prizes.
