Apollo Architects Prioritises Security and Privacy in Tokyo Courtyard Home

Eternity: A Japanese Masterpiece of Contrast and Seclusion

This blog post delves into the remarkable design of “Eternity,” a residence in Tokyo’s Shibuya Ward crafted by Apollo Architects & Associates. We’ll explore how this home balances a fortress-like exterior with an oasis of light and greenery within.

The Paradox of Eternity: A Seemingly Solid Exterior, Surprising Interior

As an architect with decades of experience, I’ve seen many approaches to designing in densely populated urban environments. The challenge is always striking a balance between privacy, security, natural light, and a sense of openness.

Apollo Architects & Associates have tackled this with “Eternity,” a project that initially presents a formidable, almost impenetrable facade.

Embracing the Urban Challenge with Architectural Precision

The exterior of Eternity is a testament to deliberate design. It’s characterized by a sophisticated interplay of materials and forms that communicate enclosure.

This composition is not only aesthetic; it serves a crucial functional purpose in its Shibuya location.

  • Rectilinear Volumes: The house is defined by stark, stacked rectilinear volumes. This design choice creates an imposing yet organized silhouette.
  • Privacy and Security: The façade is engineered for privacy and security, vital for a property on a busy corner site.
  • Materiality of Contrast: The exterior features a striking alternation between rough, board-marked concrete and smooth, thin stone tiles. This textural contrast adds depth and visual interest.
  • Reflective Elements: Mirrored glass windows are incorporated to enhance security and privacy by reflecting the surroundings. They also help the building blend with its environment.

An Unveiling of Inner Tranquility: The Heart of Eternity

Despite its closed-off exterior, the true genius of Eternity lies in its interior. Once inside, the house transforms into a sanctuary of light and life.

Courtyards and Terraces: Bringing Nature Indoors

The architectural team has woven natural elements into the core of the home. This creates spaces that feel connected to the outdoors, even within the dense city.

  • The Double-Height Courtyard: At the heart of Eternity is a double-height, sunken courtyard. This central feature draws natural light and fresh air deep into the interior.
  • Lush Greenery: A plant-filled terrace further integrates nature, providing a visual connection to greenery from various points within the house.
  • Gallery and Lounge Embrace: A narrow entrance porch leads to an L-shaped gallery, lounge, and wine cellar. Full-height glazing creates a seamless transition to the courtyard, allowing residents to enjoy the tree canopy.
  • Elevated Living and Dining: The first floor reveals the main living, dining, and kitchen area. This elevated double-height space features a sloping ceiling clad in ribbed walnut panels.
  • Terrace Extension to Living: Expansive sliding glass doors connect the living area to an open-air terrace. This outdoor space includes a planter of trees and a sloping glass canopy, extending the indoor living environment.

Functional Zones: Thoughtful Placement and Adaptability

The internal layout of Eternity demonstrates a keen understanding of space allocation for private retreat and social interaction. Features are incorporated to support modern living and entertainment.

Private Quarters and Creative Havens

The placement of private spaces and retreats is intentional. This ensures comfort and utility throughout the home.

  • West-Facing Bedrooms: The bedrooms are located in a narrow west-facing block. They offer pleasant views overlooking the main terrace and receive natural light later in the day.
  • Inspiring Studio Space: At the opposite end of the second floor, a studio provides a dedicated space for creativity and work. It features a view down onto the principal living space below.
  • The Enigmatic Basement Suite: The basement level is designed as a luxurious hospitality suite and is clad in stone. It has its own independent entrance, allowing guests to come and go without disturbing the main residence.
  • Entertainment Hub: This suite includes a billiards room and a virtual golf range. There is also a kitchen and a karaoke booth for entertaining guests.
  • Reinforcing the Inward Focus: The largest exterior volume of the house projects northwards to shelter the entrance and garage. This design choice enhances privacy and emphasizes an inward focus.

The architectural approach of Apollo Architects & Associates, led by Satoshi Kurosaki, is seen in their use of volumetric and courtyard strategies in other Tokyo homes. “Eternity” shows how to create a private haven within the vibrant city, offering both security and tranquility.
