Quietly Magical Toronto Cafe Creates a Family-Friendly Third Place

Willow Play Cafe is a collaboration between Denizens of Design and DS Studio. It reimagines a former dive bar in Toronto’s Junction as a community hub that blends a parents’ café with a children’s play area.

The project moves away from typical industrial or neon-play aesthetics. It prioritizes a mature, comforting interior where materials and textures invite curiosity without overwhelm.

The architecture and interior design work together to support family life. Careful attention is given to scale, material choices, and integrating play into everyday spaces.

A Warm, Mature Aesthetic Meets Playful Function

Walnut wall and ceiling panels create a warm, grown-up backdrop for whimsy. The front service area features a wavy-fronted counter and a checkerboard linoleum floor that nods to nostalgia while remaining timeless.

Low benches and cubbies help children shed and store shoes before entering the play zone. This signals a respectful boundary between café and playground without sacrificing accessibility.

The Willow-Inspired Play Zones

Inside the play area, the Willow motif shapes both form and activity. Two-tone green foam steps lead to a raised mezzanine hideout, while a bright red slide adds a joyful counterpoint.

Interactive walls with illuminated pegs and a pegboard of colorful cogs bring tactile, visual play within children’s reach. Seating is embedded within the play area so parents can stay close and supervise comfortably.

Play is made intrinsic to the architecture, with the café evoking a forest and the walls becoming a playground. Every element serves both imagination and function.

“Play is not an add-on; it is an architectural invariant,” the studio states.

“A café becomes a forest, and walls become games when form, material, and circulation converge toward discovery.”

This philosophy shapes Willow’s design, from the tactile walnut finishes to the movable seating.
